The long-awaited arrival of Wegovy in the UK is here. Wegovy is a new weight-loss injection manufactured by Novo Nordisk. WEGOVY® (semaglutide) injection 2.4 mg is an injectable prescription medicine that may help adults and children aged ≥12 years with obesity (BMI ≥30 for adults, BMI ≥ 95th percentile for age and sex for children), or some adults with excess weight (BMI ≥27) (overweight) who also have weight-related medical problems to help them lose weight and keep it off. Wegovy® should be used with a reduced calorie meal plan and increased physical activity

  • Wegovy® contains semaglutide and should not be used with other semaglutide-containing products or other GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines
  • It is not known if Wegovy® is safe and effective when taken with other prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal weight loss products
  • It is not known if Wegovy® can be used safely in people with a history of pancreatitis
  • It is not known if Wegovy® is safe and effective for use in children under 12 years of age

Wegovy and weight loss

Wegovy can lead to weight loss because it is designed to suppress appetite so you eat less. It mimics the action of a gut hormone called GLP-1, which is released after eating, and it slows down the movement of food in your gut so you stay full for longer.

Wegovy® is an injectable prescription medication for adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or overweight (excess weight) (BMI ≥27) who also have weight-related medical problems, to help them lose weight and keep it off. Wegovy® should be used with a reduced-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity.

Achieving optimal weight-loss results with Wegovy® requires reaching and staying at the full dose

Wegovy® comes in 5 different dose strengths. You start Wegovy® at a dose of 0.25 mg once a week and increase the dose every 4 weeks until you reach the full dose of 2.4 mg. It’s important to follow the dosing schedule as recommended by your health care provider.

Wegovy® Dosing Schedule for Adults

  • Start Wegovy® at a dose of 0.25 mg once a week for your first month
  • For your second month, you can increase your weekly dose to 0.5 mg
  • For your third month, you can increase your weekly dose to 1 mg
  • For your fourth month, you can increase your weekly dose to 1.7 mg
  • For the fifth month onward, you can increase your weekly dose to the full dose of 2.4 mg

Before using semaglutide, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, gallbladder disease, disease of the pancreas (pancreatitis), a certain eye problem (diabetic retinopathy), mental/mood disorders (such as depression, thoughts of suicide), certain stomach/intestinal disorders (gastroparesis, problems digesting food).

If you have diabetes, this product may affect your blood sugar. Check your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. Tell your doctor right away if you have symptoms of low blood sugar (see Side Effects section). Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication(s), exercise program, or diet.

This drug may make you dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

Children may be at greater risk for gallbladder disease, rash, and low blood pressure while using this drug.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should not become pregnant while using semaglutide and for 2 months after the last dose. Semaglutide may harm an unborn baby. If you become pregnant, talk to your doctor right away about the risks and benefits of this medication.

It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Nausea is a common side effect when first starting Wegovy, while other side effects can include constipation and diarrhoea.

If you have diabetic eye disease (retinopathy) and are using insulin, then Wegovy may lead to a worsening of your vision, and this may require treatment. Tell your healthcare provider if you have diabetic eye disease or if you experience eye problems during treatment with this medication.

More information about the side effects will be contained in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) which comes in the box of the medication.

It is important that a person takes individual advice from their healthcare team before starting a new prescription of Wegovy, and reports any side effects.
