Juvederm: Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Filler
Everything You Need to Know About Juvederm Dermal Fillers
What is Juvederm?
Juvederm Facial Filler: Made of a hyaluronic acid gel, Juvederm is a naturally-occurring substance in the skin that contributes to volume and hydration. Juvederm is a dermal filler treatment that is used to reduce facial lines and wrinkles, ultimately creating a more youthful appearance. The effectiveness of Juvederm lies in the power of its hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that can both attract and hold many times its weight in water. It naturally moisturises and smooths the face; however, it declines with age. Juvederm works by selectively restoring hyaluronic acid levels in areas where people want it most. When Juvederm is injected into areas that are displaying signs of ageing, it acts as a binding agent between water and skin, resulting in the restoration of moisture and plumpness. Juvederm is made by Allergan, the same makers of Botox.
After countless hours of research, you’ve finally settled on Juvederm as the right injectable for you. However, with all the different types of Juvederm available, it can be difficult to decide which type of Juvederm will be right for you while giving the result you need. We’ve put together a short guide so that you can understand more about the different types of Juvederm that are available, the treatments, side-effects and which one may be the right choice for you.
Preparing for Juvederm
In general, a juvéderm filler treatment schedule will require only one a brief personal consultation. This is followed by a short period of preparation during which you may be asked to refrain from using certain medications or supplements. After the treatment session, results typically appear in two weeks. To maintain results, you may need to return for follow-up treatments after 1-2 years, depending on the type of Juvederm injected.
It all starts with a personal meeting where we get to know you and your aesthetic goals. We work closely with you to design a treatment plan, and to decide what Juvederm dermal filler is right for you. During this time we cover your medical history, medications, and any conditions you may have. In addition, we also answer any questions that you want us to answer and make sure that you are an ideal candidate for treatment.
Rupesh during the consultation will evaluate your face from many angles – looking at your deep wrinkles and creases if you have any, as well as volume deficits seen with ageing. It’s important to discuss what areas bother you with your doctor so they can explain how the filler will work to correct that area. Sometimes, the dermal filler needs to be injected above or below the area of concern to achieve the optimal result. The injections are performed with a small needle or a cannula. All Juvederm dermal fillers have anaesthetic mixed right into the product that helps almost immediately with any discomfort. You can expect minimal swelling and small possibility of bruising. The initial results are visible immediately.
Before treatment, there is usually a period of time where we ask patients to avoid certain substances or physical activities. We typically advise patients not to consume alcohol for 24 hours before treatment, as well as avoiding Aspirin or other painkillers that thin the blood like Ibuprofen & Nurofen. In addition, you may be given a list of supplements, ointments, or medications to avoid in the week before your session.
On the day of your appointment, we recommend that you avoid wearing makeup in the treatment area. Patients are frequently surprised at how quick the treatment process is. One injection can often be completed in under an hour with patients leaving our clinic to resume work or their normal activities that same day. After you arrive at our clinic at 8 Harley Street, London, one of our receptionist will make sure you are in a comfortable position and relaxed. You will be directed to our clinic where you will meet with Rupesh.
Rupesh will clean your skin, then apply a topical local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort. After this, your doctor will use a fine needle to inject the product into the skin in the predetermined areas. This will create an immediate lift, which your doctor will carefully build to achieve your desired results. Most of our patients report that the injections are completely painless. The entire treatment process typically takes between 15-60 minutes in total.
Once Rupesh is finished, you can see your fresh new skin in a mirror and admire your results. You should notice improved volume in the cheeks and mid face, minimised lines and wrinkles, decreased skin laxity, and an overall brighter, smoother appearance. After your appointment, you can return to your normal day-to-day activities with zero downtime required.
Patients are encouraged to avoid excessive heat or sun exposure for 24 hours after treatment. In addition, we recommend avoiding alcohol and strenuous activity for the first day. Finally, for optimal results we suggest that patients avoid massage for two weeks following treatment, to give the filler ample time to settle. More specific details will be given in person, but the list of requirements is very small and is designed for ease and comfort.
- Avoid excessive heat such as saunas, hot showers, the hot sun or cooking over a hot stove. This may cause the blood vessels to dilate and cause more bleeding and bruising.
- Avoid strenuous exercise after the procedure. This may raise your blood pressure and pulse causing more bruising and swelling.
- Avoid direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time. Wear sun block to protect your skin. Sunlight may cause permanent discolouration after bruising.
- Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours after treatment. Alcohol may cause the blood vessels to dilate and cause more bruising.
- If lips are treated avoid straw drinking immediately after your treatment and for 2 weeks.
- No massages of the area treated or with face in a massage cradle for 2 weeks after treatment.
- Avoid taking Nurofen, Vitamin E, Ginger, Ginko, Bilboa, Ginseng, and Garlic for 2 weeks after the procedure since this may increase the risk of bruising. You may shower and do most other regular daily activities.
- Do not apply Make-up after the procedure for 12 to 24 hours.
- You may apply cold compresses or ice pack to the treatment sites to reduce swelling and bruising.
- We recommend Arnica tablets or gel to prevent bruising.
- Note that any bumps or marks from the extremely small needle sticks will go away within a few hours. If you do develop a bruise it will resolve like any other bruise. There is occasionally some mild pain, swelling, itching, or redness at the site of injection similar to most other injections. Redness may last for 1-2 days, rarely longer.
Target areas for Juvederm
Because all parts of your face can be injected with hyaluronic acid, Juvederm can be used to treat a number of common aesthetic issues:
Hollow or Sunken Cheeks
One of the first places to be impacted by the ageing process is the mid face – Cheeks, which can steadily lose volume and appear more hollow as you grow older. With one dermal filler treatment, you can see your cheeks become rounder and plumper and your mid face become more volumised. This simple treatment can lift your entire face, giving you a distinctly younger appearance. The cheek area can be defined or volumised using the specialised technique.
Nasolabial folds, which are often called smile lines, develop in the thicker skin between the nose and mouth. These lines can deepen as you grow older and may become a source of low self-esteem as you see these folds in your skin every time you look in a mirror. A dermal filler injection can instantly fill and lift these lines to create smoother, younger-looking skin.
Smile lines, or laugh lines, occur around the eyes as a result of the continuous movement of our faces when expressing emotion. Also a result of genetics and ageing, wrinkle lines around the eyes can be softened with fine injections of Juvederm. This treatment is also indicated for random lines or wrinkles in the face that you might like to have minimised.
Mouth & Thin lips
Vertical lines above the mouth begin to appear due to age, and sometimes habits like smoking or excessive use of straws, both activities that force lips to pucker, can cause lines to form. Although you may see some residual improvement as a result of lip plumping, often the wrinkles themselves need to be filled. Cracks on either side of the lips can also be smoothed with injections. Not all women use fillers for anti-aging or to get larger lips. There are both men and women with naturally uneven mouths who will see excellent results from the addition of Juvederm to balance their smile.
Marionette lines reach from the corners of the mouth to the outer corners of the chin. As you grow older, these lines can become more noticeable. They may also make your mouth appear downturned and cause you to look sad or upset even when you feel happy. Dermal fillers can help resolve this issue by fading marionette lines and building volume in your chin and at the corners of your mouth.
- Skin Laxity
As our skin develops fine lines and wrinkles and loses collagen, it tends to become lax. The strong structure underneath, a matrix built and sustained by collagen, begins to come apart. Juvederm dermal fillers help this matrix to rebuild, lifting the skin and tightening it for a more youthful look.

How does Juvederm work?
This Juvederm injectable gel dermal filler is made of synthesised hyaluronic acid, a natural substance and a substance which occurs naturally in your face. Hyaluronic acid adds moisture and stimulates the production of collagen (a protein in your body which fends off wrinkles). As we age, our bodies produce less and less of both hyaluronic acid and collagen. Dermal fillers like Juvederm can help restore them. Each dose of filler has a hyaluronic acid gel of varying thicknesses. Different thicknesses are more or less appropriate for different areas of the face or different concerns–some are perfect for lipstick lines, while others are made to address those really deep wrinkles. Each of the products in the line also comes with a bit of lidocaine, which keeps you comfortable during treatment. The gel goes to work directly lifting the skin from underneath, and it does so naturally so that no one will realise you’ve had a treatment unless you tell them.
Risks and side effects of Juvederm
Juvederm is a dermal filler that contains a small quantity of a local anaesthetic (lidocaine) that allows patients to remain more comfortable during the treatment session. After injections, it is common for patients to experience some symptoms for about a week. Mild to moderate swelling and bruising should dissipate in 5 – 7 days. Other common side effects at the injection sites are:
- Redness or discolouration
- A small bump or firmness
If patients experience any severe discomfort or symptoms after 7 – 10 days following the injection, they should immediately contact us on our mobile number. Minor swelling and bruising at the injection site are the most common Juvederm side effects. You might also experience some skin redness or tenderness at the injection site. These effects are only temporary and will subside over time.
Serious side effects and allergic reactions can occur if you receive treatment from a clinic who isn’t a specially trained medical professional. That’s why it’s very important to choose your clinic wisely. Rupesh has had the experience and training required to perform Juvederm treatment safely, so you can feel confident in the care you’ll receive from us.
